red top fly trap finally started working!!
« on: July 19, 2010, 17:01 »
It's been up 9 days today and this is the first day it's worked and it stinks!!!! my garden is small so I might have to think of another plan for fly control

I tried them a couple of years ago and didn't rate them much. Like you  I thought they  stank  and attracted flies that wouldn't have come if it wasn't for their pong and they look horrible when full of wiggling and dead flies

The flies here this year are driving me bonkers

I've tried it for the first time and has been up for a week ....agree it looks absolutely disgusting and the smell...yuk ...especially when I topped up the water !   It is right at the end of our garden though so enough space to not be near it   Am waiting now for some more really hot weather to see if it actaully does cut down the amount of flies in the run.  Am not looking forward to disgarding either.

How long do they usually last or does it depend on how may flies get trapped?

I had mine up for 3 weeks and it quickly did it's job from day two, during this time I had no flies in the house and rarely saw one near my chooks but as I have a small garden with houses very close I decided to take it down at the weekend as the smell was so bad and I thought the neighbours would think it was my chooks, plus it was making me feel sick. It was three quarters full when I disposed of it, which also makes me think I was attracting far more flies than I would have otherwise had. If you have a big garden and can keep it away from the house and neighbours I think they are great.

Have you tried poo picking for 200 chickens Nicky?      I think I'll stick to my Red Top.  I don't care where the flies come from as long as they don't go into my house   :D

I had some sent over from the UK via Ebay, and our first one has been up for about 4 days now, I noticed there were some flies in it yesterday, but it hadnt started smelling yet, so it cant be properly cooked. Tell me though what does it smell like? Bad eggs? Fish? Worse?????

I think with large numbers of chickens or if you keep ducks so can't poo pick they are great. Mine is full now and I've noticed the past few days lots of flies by the house so I'm putting another up. I know it attracts more flies from the stream and field but it doesn't bother me as is at the end of the garden so I can only smell it when I go into the run and it keeps them away from the house and patio :)

I`ve just emptied the fly trap for the second time since april , the trap filled in 3 weeks.

How many greenbottles are there in a pint.?

Would it still work if I covered it in duct tape so I didn't have to see inside it?

Last year I emptied it and puked  ::)  So this year I just bought a couple so I could replace after a month or two once full! Not sure about duct tape to not see in, the smell attracts them and heat helps the smell so not sure what effect the duct tape would have - I bet Auntie would know - AUNTIE????;) :D

Then to see if it was full you`d have to open it ! :tongue2:

Just get some pigs and cover them with sticky honey.  Problem solved and afterwards great on the BBQ too!

I was wondering about these as I'd heard they were good. I use fly paper (which happens to be quite good) & poo pick.

As for it smelling like a corpse - 20 odd yrs in nursing has numbed my nasal passages quite well.
