Mulch...and stuff!

When it comes to mulching, there are some large piles of old grass clippings up the top of the communal area at the rear of our cottages.  Can they be used as mulch?  Can't see why not, but best to ask the experts!

Not the best mulch as it tends to get a bit clumpy (OK when dug in though)  - from an unknown source it may contain lots of weed seeds, or worse, have been sprayed with weedkiller before being cut.

It is just from the communal lawns behind us, NO weedkiller present!

Perfect! As long as the ground is good and damp already, a layer of grass clippings makes a good mulch, especially around fruit trees and bushes in my experience. Last Autumn I put a good four inches round the rhubarb, and although it did break down of course, it has done the rhubarb good this year, and the possible sliminess wasn't really noticed because it was undisturbed and kind of sealed itself over, if you see what I mean!
