Poorly Chicken
« on: January 23, 2012, 18:53 »
Hi
One of my girlies is unwell, she is very quiet, not mixing with the other girlies and she is puffed up.

We noticed yellow poo that looks like boiled egg yolk and it seems to be quite chalky, it is caked onto her feathers.  She is still eating we haven't seen her drink today but she was drinking from puddles yesterday.

She is preening herself still but just seems to be very quiet and still.  We have separated her as a precaution and a couple of the other girlies were pecking other yesterday so she kept hiding under the coup.

Please can anyone help!! Is this poo normal or should we be worried and preparing for the  worst case scenario!!!

 :( :( :( :(

Could she have had a soft shelled egg as I'm wondering whether the "poo like egg yolk" is in fact egg yolk?  Have you noticed whether she's layed recently as passing a soft shelled egg can certainly take it out of them.  A warm bath might help her and then dry her with a hair dryer on warm (not hot).  If it's not that then maybe she's eaten something that she shouldn't.  One of mine did this and was very still all day, hardly moving at all.  The next day he was almost back to his normal self.  See how she is tomorrow but if she's no better a trip to the vet might be in order.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Was just about to say the same as kegs.

Is it definately poo or could it be egg yolk from a soft shelled egg?  A warm water bath holding her so her bottom is submerged for about 20 minutes gently washing off anything stuck to her feathers will help.  Gently towel dry and finish with a hair dryer set on a low/medium heat until thoroughly dried.  The bath should help her to pass any soft shell left.  If this is not the problem it will make her feel better not having a soiled bum.

The other hens will peck at her bottom if it is a broken egg.
