I have noticed these greyish patches on my tomato plant stem and looked this up in the Dr. Hessayon book who says it is botrytis, but apparently this is a mouldy grey patch, and mine is not mouldy as such.

Is this botrytis, if it is do I have to chuck the plant, and how do I protect the others ?

It looks like botrytis to me. Bin it and keep the others plants in a dry atmosphere.

Mould usually starts when the air is damp and still...

Not easy to tell from the photo, i thought the stem may have been grazed by a slug or snail.

It's always been inside, so I don't think it could be a slug or snail unfortunately.

Is it safe to compost said botrytis-riddled plant ?

I would say 'never put any diseased material in my compost bin'........an easy rule to remember

Put it in the council bin.

which is why nobody with any sense wants to buy compost from the local recycling plant
