shallots from seed
« on: February 14, 2016, 12:05 »
Hi Folks just a quick question re raising transplants from seed. I have sown my seed and they germinated well and have started to grow away. I was wondering how long I should let them go before I prick them out into individual modules for growing on until planting out?

Hi

Similar part of the world as yourself so I'm interested in the replies as well. My zebrune are growing on in a deeper container in reasonably good medium but are still thin, approx 3-4" tall.

As the ground is so wet i'll be leaving them to grow on for a while yet. I expect them to strengthen up within a few weeks. I've been treating them in the same manner as onions. If this assumption is incorrect, someone will set me on the right path.

On doing a search on here i came across a post that said shallots frown from seed don't multiply as set do. This is disappointing as we use shallots galore. One seed= 1 shallot apparently!
Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.

Hi Aussie
Where abouts are you ?
Yes you only get one shallot per seed but the grow fairly big, about the size of a medium onion so I am told. Its my first year growing them from deed so I cannot really say but have seen a guy on youtube and he had very good shallots. I think treating them like onions is a fair way of growing them.
My garden is like a bog just now so they won't go in before April probably. I get my main crop onions from the local market and another type of onion called Trebons which is a very sweet and versatile onion and can be eaten at all stages of growth and they are very cheap to buy.
Going to get much colder over then next week or so too!

We're in the Tarn, in a bastide just east of Albi. Not as subjected to as much rain as you would be but current falls are a bit of a challenge. Just returned now from the potager and walkways were very squishy. As we do lasagne method, our beds are well raised so all the chard, strawberries, spring onions and onion sets (blanc & red baron) are looking good. Onions have a good 4" sprouts already and the spring onions have only been in 4 days but they're starting to stand up again now. It was a bit of a risk as they were whisper thin. I'm chuffed as this is our first year of vegrtable growing. Someone kindly offered me a 1/4 of their potager in October (7.5 x 5.5M) so we've been busy adding organic material in layers since then. It's quite heavy clay as i gather is yours, reading through your posts. Rock hard in summer!

I noticed your mention of Trebons so i'll be looking out for them when next i go to Caussade markets as they have a better offer of transplants than our local one.

I'll continue to watch your posts with interest.

Right that is a good bit further east. I am sure it will be a lot drier over there. We get a lot of rain in the late part of the winter and early spring. I don't know if you will get Trebons onions over that way they are quite specialised and come from the Bigorre region but hopeful some of the local nurseries might do them.
I don't grow any winter veg simply because my veg garden floods so easily... it is under water as we speak :) However it is great for all the summer vegs which we bottle in large quantities so much better than anything you can buy in a can at the shops. Our garden is quite large at 4000sqm but the veg plot is only 20x15m it has been a veg garden for over one hundred years so there is not a stone worth talking about in it but it has quite a lot of  silt so it is difficult to work. When the moisture content is perfect you would think it was the perfect garden soil however it only takes a heavy shower and it gets a bit muddy, then it dries and is very hard. So in summary in summer time it is amazing ... winter time forget it! Hope your garden keeps going well!
