No more beer traps for me!
« on: July 16, 2016, 19:34 »
So having had quite a lot of damage done by slugs to the strawberries thought I'd supplement the organic pellets with beer traps.  Have managed to finish off two slugs and about a dozen black beetles!  Definitely not the desired result, beetles are a garden friend.  Out with the beer traps...

Try leaving the traps raised above the soil a bit,the slugs will climb in but the beetles should run around the rim

Hi Snowdrops, the traps are about 5 inches deep and only the bottom inch was buried as per the instructions.  I did put them between the strawberry plants so maybe the beetles were dropping off the leaves...

A YouTuber said that what draws slugs to beer is the yeast content so why waste good beer - just use a yeast solution.

That's what I use. I make my own bread and just mix up a small amount of easy bake yeast with water and works a treat.
Best thing to do though is lay your milk or pop bottle on its side, that way you will not get frogs or other things accidentally fall into it. If a frog can get in, it will get out as laying down sideways, there is not enough to drown a frog, but will a slug or snail.
The video below shows the pp bottle way, but I use 4pint milk bottles instead., that way you can push them into the ground on their side nicely a little.

I use old yeast too with a touch of sugar and salt.  Add a few pieces of orange/grapefruit in the pot too.  Last night was bad there was an army of slugs.  I managed to stamp out a few hundred, stab the ones on the potatos.  I have had to revert to the organic pellets as the damage was too harsh.
