Growing cucumbers
« on: May 02, 2007, 20:08 »
:? Thought I'd been told to grow cucumbers in my "manure mound" - a patch rescued from a bog and covered with black teram!
The spuds I stuck down there are doing fine. I was going to do the same with corgettes and cucmbers.
But Gardeners Question Time today said you must keep the cucumbers away from the wet ground! And that I should plant them on a little hillock to allow max drainage.
What do you think? I could keep them away from the wet soil with the teram but will they need some support to lift them off the ground?

I always plant mine in a dryish spot in coldframes but I don't keep the glass on them. I plant them in the same bed each year but do add
new compost/manure each winter. They have always done ok.
Last year I had a fall in April spraining my wrist badly so could not sow my usual amount of seeds etc. and had to buy 2 cucumber plants at a ridiculus price, this year planted far to many to compensate and have about 30 cucumber plants!!! so plenty for my friends.

I think its cause they are prone to rotting at the base if they are too soggy underneath.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.
