I've planted mine in the border of the greenhouse and then when they need it I tie up string to the roof supports and tie them in to that.   I leave the 'tie ins' loose to accomodate swelling of the main plant and have never had a problem. Only doing two this year as we found three last year provided us and neighbours with more than we could eat or give away!

I was wondering how many to plant, thinking of 3 but seems it will be too many so 2 it is. Anyway, I'm growing an outdoor variety, and was going to train them up a couple of sturdy trellis's. I've also read you can train them flat over a pallet

I grow both Toms and Cues up both a string (tied to the roof of the greenhouse) and a cane.

I find that a string-only method means the string has to take a lot of weight, whereas with a cane most of the weight is on the cane, which means less chance of string breaking / or force being applied to the greenhouse structure. A cane on its own is prone to keel over, so needs something else to provide rigidity.

I grew 2 cucumbers successfully last year, and that was enough for our household, but I think there is a real risk of losing one through collar rot (is that the right term? when the stem rots at the base of the plant), so I'm growing three this year to allow a sacrifice of one if necessary!
