Spring Cabbage & Caulis, too late?
« on: September 29, 2011, 11:39 »
Last year I planted a tray of spring cabbage I bought from a garden centre about this time of year.
This year I planned on growing them from seed myself, but seem to have missed planting them (probably because in my mind the end of Sept was the time to do them).
Is it too late to start sowing them now? Should I just do as last year and get a tray from the garden centre?
Same question with caulis really, except I have never tried them before.
Thanks!

They'd probably grow ok, but maybe wouldn't heart until later in the year than usual.
If it's important spacewise to clear the bed straight after them for another crop, then I'd get some transplants in modules from the garden centre. A lot have been reduced at the moment, so you could grab some bargains :)

Thanks m1ckz & mumofstig.
I have no problems of space - most of summer crops are out now, certainly where I will be putting brassicas next year.

I will buy some seeds and sow some, but also have a quick look at the garden centre.
Hedge my bets :)

Better have too many than none  :nowink:  and they won't all the ready together, which'll be good  :D

Buy some Spring cabbage plants.

Too late for Spring cabbage from seed. If they survive the Winter they will be very late maturing and may never come to anything.

Quick maturing cabbage such as Hispi or Primo can be seeded early in the Spring and soon produce heads.

Too late for Spring caulis now. Better to sow some early in the Spring.

I love Hispi and Primo. Quick growing sweet little cabbages, and they grow very quickly once planted

I shall be sowing mine about now into trays and then plant them out later.

When do you expect to plant them out and when do you expect then to head?

Eight weeks ago I sowed some, which are not about a foot high. Four weeks ago these first sowing plants were a good six inches high and I sowed some more, but at the moment they are barely three inches high.

Hopefully this late warm spell may give them a boost...
