« on: September 25, 2011, 15:49 »
Anyone know why my spinach hasnt grown. I planted a whole row of seeds and not one has come up.? It has been at least a month since and my broad beans have all taken.
Any ti[ps would be much appreciated.

What sort of temperatures have you been having?  I assume you watered properly?  Could they have been attacked at ground level by slugs etc?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I had an early crop of spinach back in May that produced very little before bolting. I haven't had anything come up since despite repeat sowings. Unsure whether it's duff seed or too much variability in the weather. Having said that I cannot recall seeing any growing on neighbouring plots. Last year mine did reasonably well before bolting.

I'm going to try perpetual spinach to see how that does.

I always start my spinach off in pots - maybe that will help

Perpetual spinach is much better to grow. It usually goes through the first year, cropping consistently, then bolts the following spring/summer.
I say usually. This year mine started to bolt but I cut it right back and it seems to have done the trick and is cropping normally again.
Swiss chard has done exactly the same,
Looks like I've got both for winter greens but I won't speak too soon with the heat wave we're getting......

I've just got some more Apollo F1 seeds... should I start them in seed trays or pots in the greenhouse or chuck them straight into a veg bag planter outside?

I chucked my last lot out as they went all slimey and the leaves went yellow  :(
