If you mean after harvesting, it only needs to be a day or so. This is not long enough for them to turn green.

Knock any large clumps of soil off, but don't wash them. This can damage the skin.

I bring mine home, lay them on an old sheet on the driveway and gently turn a couple of times.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hell out there,
What we do with potatoes is we purchased a black plastic garbage bin from the hardware store. We always dig up the potatoes and dump them in this bin which are situated in the store room. We keep the lid on and it stays cool and no light to bother it. This way we have use of them for months to come with no problems. I have noticed that other folks over here leave their potatoes in the soil and dig up what they need when they need it.

ED :)

Hello Tony,
Yes we would not want to do that, hope we don't get that wire-worm! I remember back home how we had huge problems with wire-worm, we had to gas the soil. We have been real lucky here because the soil is a bit clay of nature and not sandy.

Glad you've posted this thread Flump  :).

I've read about storing your spuds in paper or hessian sacks. Would a large, with top just folded over and not sealed, cardboard box with holes punched in the sides; be a suitable alternative? It would be stored in a cool dark place.

Thanks in advance, Mash  :).

I've done it that way with no problems.

I wouldn't advise the plastic bin though, the spuds would sweat and get damp.

Maybe NZ spuds don't do that!

Mine go in green plastic stacker crates that I have on 'long term loan ' from a certain supermarket chain.

After loosing most of my stored spuds in last year's deep freeze, I have built a store cupboard in my shed which is insulated all round with left-over loft insulation and bought a parrafin greenhouse heater from a car boot sale. I'm hoping that will protect this year's crop over the winter

I do mine similar to DD, except I leave mine on top of the soil for two hours to dry out, flip them for another hour of sunning, knock off any dirt clods, then into hessian sacks, never plastic. The potatoes still have a lot of moisture in them and the sweat quickly turns into rot in plastic.

We built a large wooden storage box (pallet pieces would be ideal here) on short legs that we kept in our cellar. (I know, we're lucky to have a cellar, and a storage one for veg at that.) When we moved, we left the box behind (too heavy) and I now use foldable plastic cartons that easily hold a bushel each and I empty the sacks into that. Sides are slatted, top is open so lots of air movement and a marker as to variety. My mum still keeps hers in the hessian sacks, but in a cool frost free basement. Frost free is the key point. And it's important to exclude all light.

I remember years back when folkpainted kitchen potato boxes were a decorating rage. Don't see them anymore as they didn't work. Kitchens are just too warm for them to store well, and the cutesy heart cutouts (supposedly for air) turned many green instead. A plain wooden box with a hinged lid and kept in a cool bedroom or hall closet  is far better.
