Grass cuttings
« on: March 27, 2013, 19:09 »
Hi,
Could some one tell me please, whether or not I can dig  old grass cuttings into my veggy plot or will I end up with a lawn. If not is there any other use for them.

I used a load of rotted grass cuttings last year where I planted my Desirees as it's said to reduce scab

I keep a builders rubble sack on my plot to chuck grass mowings in (my plot has grass paths and a bit of a lawn). The mowings start to rot down very fast and I add then add them in layers with other compostibles that I put into the dalek composters.  If you add too many at once they go very slimy

Grass unlike other plants grows from the roots so grass cuttings and clippings will not sprout.  You're safe there.

Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

unless the cuttings contained seeds.  However, much easier to pull out the seedlings than established grass so not a problem.  Grass cuttings will improve soil so go for it  :D

Dig them in by all means.
Later in the year, when we have hot weather we hope, grass cutting make a great mulch around peas and beans and anything else to keep the moisture in the  soil
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Today I have learnt a good tip .... never thought of using the grass cuttings this way.  My garden is 200' long so i have alot of grass cuttings to much for the compost so the surplus ends up in the garden bin.
2 Books and No idea!!!  Learning as I go!

Please don't use lawn mowings that have been treated with broad-leaved weedkillers as all veggies are broad-leaved!

I used grass cuttings last year as a very effective mulch around peas, beans, fennel and courgettes - really effective against weeds, and then just dug it in after the plants were composted
