Title: Turf Wall construction
Post by: RichardY on March 03, 2016, 13:32
I'm looking at constructing a windbreak for about 3 acres of land. I thought about hedging but don't want to wait maybe 4 years at least. Is a turf wall construction a bad idea? I originally began constructing small horseshoe shaped plots but began to run low on turf. I think constructing  segements of walls 2-3 feet thick and at least 6 feet high perpendicular to the prevailing wind, might work.

My aim is to improve the growing the climate for plants and make the area more comfortable to work in, the wind can be strong in this area. I also plan to dig a drainage channel accross the plots to try and remove excess water the land is clay with basically no topsoil.(http://)

The wonderful weather here might erode a turf wall, but you could also put in hedging at the same time. Quite a lot of dry stone walls from the quarries are popular as well.

If you could put a sheep fence in ie wooden poles with animal wire and then either hedge or willow would be nice.

A lot of the farmers are putting in drainage ditches now and they do fill up with water.

There is a free tree incentive at the moment for non garden areas, but you need to google that.
