A spade and a fork

The spade for the hard initial digging then the fork for digging afterwards

To this

Using a spade, rake, gloves, bucket for stones/perrenials and hard work

The most important one being hard work

If you can find a five prong cultivator (I know they had them in B&Q) then that helped me loads!  They twist weeds out.  The ones in there might have too short handles for a chappy though, so try before you buy :-)

PS dont forget lots and lots of drinks and snacks

If you plan to do straight rows of plants, you could make a simple homemade line from 2 sticks and a length of string. Not everyone has a 'straight' eye for setting in plants or making paths.
I'd also recommend a wide-brimmed hat for the sunny and rainy days, and a good thermos bottle for cold water.  And a small fold-up stool for those much-needed rest periods.

As well as all the usual tools - I found my Azada (or is it Adaza?) and my 'Right Angled Fork' most useful!

Cheers

I took one of those stainless steel thermos flasks with cold water down to the allotment on Saturday, when it was really hot.

I'm sure the water would have been lovely ... except that I left the flask in the sun, and it was too hot to handle!!

It did cool down once in the shade, and yes the water was lovely and cold.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

for speed and ease I can definitely recommend an Azada

they can chew up metres of ground in minutes much more superior than a spade and without the back ache
