Could anyone tell me, how many onions grow from one bulb? and the same for garlic cloves.  Does the onion set swell or does it produce more onions. How nieve am I? (No answers required to the last question please)

One onion from one set, shallots and garlic however produce a number of bulbs from each set / clove planted.

Not a naive question, I didn't know until last November when I planted my over wintering Garlic out. None of us were born with knowledge we all gained it by asking questions and listening to others.

Actually I want to change that, my far better half was born knowing how to use my Credit Card and from the day we met 25 years ago she has been putting that knowledge into practice.

Newseed don't worry we'll help

Onion sets -small onion becomes a large onion

Garlic- a clove becomes a bulb

Shallot-a shallot becomes lots of shallots

Good growing

Cheers HH :)
Keep digging

One thing I have found over the years regarding shallots is that if you plant a big one then you will get loads of smaller ones, but if you plant a smaller one you will get bigger ones but fewer.

Sounds daft but it is true, honest.

Last year just to confirm my suspicions I separated my bag of shallots into the large and small and planted 2 separate rows and hey presto it did happen. :D

Thanks everyone, you'll probably be getting alot more daft questions from me - afterall I am new to this game.  And Sharky, no-one laughed (well I didn't hear them) thats the good thing about this forum everyone wants to help.  So it pays to asks questions, because now we're both a bit wiser.
