Hi, I dont know how to break news to my neighbour, we have a hedge thats devides our garden between our neighbours, the hedge is dead and we begun digging it out to purchase a proper fence, however we found the base of a tree, the tree grows diagnally and hangs in the neighbours, he loves it!!! We are desperate for a fence, the alternative would be to lose 2ft of garden and let him have the entire tree, we need clearance to add bases for a fence, how could I tell my bird loving neighbour the tree needs to be removed ???

Is the tree root in your garden or your neighbours ?
Is it your boundary or your neighbours ? It may say on your deeds.

If its in my garden I would just say sorry tree going, fence on way.
I dont mess about I call a spade a spade.

If it is your tree (see Aunty's post) and you are going to remove it, perhaps you could plan another more suitable tree to plant on your boundary.
Or I have seen trees where the trunk goes through a gap in the fence...... depends how much you want the tree I guess

could you plant another hedge that would grow around the tree?

I forgot to ask what type of tree it is and how old is it. (many trees are protected !)

Also, remember that if it has birds nesting in it, you can't disturb them until they have finished nesting - so much later in the year.

Thanks I dont know what tree it is except it is mature, it drops lots of little white tiny balls this time of year, we have already compromised because during the sale the previous owners had a civil agreement that they would accept their waste water pipe into now our grid, so I receive their bath water and kitchen waste because 2 extensions were built and there was a problem with the joining drain, now I have the lot, but I like my neighbours and I wont fall out over a waste water pipe, but the fence thing and the tree is just doing my head in :nowink:
