Wilko Ripoff!
« on: January 31, 2024, 15:49 »
I just thought I'd have a look at Wilko online to see if seed potatoes are in yet... yes they are but their prices are crazy!!
Cara £6.60 for 5 seed, Albert Bartlett £7 for 5 seed, Desiree £8.50 for 6 seed, don't get me started on the 2.5 & 4kg bags!!

We buy ours loose at a local garden centre.

Their potatoes in their online shop costs £3.49 per kilo.

Don't forget that Wilko's isn't the same business as it was pre 2023 when it went into administration.  It is now owned by the Range.
I think the best bet is either a local garden centre that allows selection by the tuber or a local potato day that  does similar.
I will be getting mine from the West Yorkshire Organic Group potato day this year at 15p a tuber.
Online, Simply Seed don't have bad prices but everything is more expensive this year.

They are competitive with DT Brown. Kings Seeds is a lot better but some of theirs are not good and Suttons are between the other two. Yorkshire Trading in local town are 8 potatoes for £1.99.

Glad I'm not stocking an allotment any more. Could be an expensive year for spuds from the greengrocer at this rate.

I don’t know if you have one of these garden centres near you Andy, but our local one is good value on seed spuds.

They do mail order if not.

As I am in Ireland I have bought my seed potatoes from a certified seller in Northern Ireland and it wasn’t too bad at all. This year I am doing Irish gold (they look like king Edwards), Arran Victory (from the Arran isles), Desiree and an improved Bintje called Alberta from the Netherlands. My daughter brought them over. It’s a fantastic chip potato.
But 7 pounds for 5? No thank you.

Yep, garden centre definitely best bet, they sell them loose at our local one in 500 g (£1.50) or 1kg (£3.00). So you can have as many as you need to have. Also do onion sets and beans by weight as well.

I'm waiting for mine to arrive from Kings. 2.5kg each of Casablanca, Cara & Charlotte for £14.95 + postage, but I ordered other stuff as well.

Ref my previous post. Get about 10 seed potatoes for a kilo, sometimes 500 -750g, depends on the size of them really. Does size make a difference  :D ? Probably been answered before on here, but can't find it.
I'm not really sure, as long as they chit ok and sprout, it shouldn't make any difference to the yield, should it?

The best seed potatoes to plant are about the size of a chickens egg.  But not all potato varieties know that  ::)

Mine arrived from Kings the other day. Now sat in the spare bedroom. There were roughly 30 in each pack.
