Storing Carrots
« on: November 24, 2018, 13:12 »
Hi,

I'm looking to clear out my plot so I would like to remove the 2 rows of carrots I still have.  Whats the best way to preserve them please?

Packed in very slightly damp sand/compost in boxes or buckets without lids in the shed or garage.
Or peeled and cut up how you like, bagged and frozen.

Can this be any horticultural silver sand?

I use spent compost, and it works well,

For this purpose next year I was thinking of using small stackable plastic fruit & veg trays our local Polish Deli throw out, about 24x18" and 2-3 inches high, lined with cardboard then filled with sand or compost. Like these:

Would this work if they were then stored in a shed? Also could any root veg be stored this way?

DHM, don’t know about root veg as I’ve never stored any like that but those type of trays are good for onions & apples.
Sand for carrots can it be any dry sand? We’ve got 2 bags of leftover building sand is that any good?

I posted about a sand clamp in 8doubles' question about parsnips... dry sand was the key.
