170g/6 oz S/R flour....(or 6 oz plain flour + 1 teaspn each of baking powder and bicarb)
140g/5oz caster sugar
2 tablespns cocoa powder
2 tablespns golden syrup or treacle
2 eggs
150 ml/5 fl oz vegetable oil
150 ml/5 fl oz milk.
You can add a few drops of caramel colour (gravy browning) if you would like it to look dark brown, and sometimes I stir in a teaspoon of powdered coffee to enrich the flavour.

Preheat oven 170'C gas 3

Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl, add all wet ingredients and stir untill well blended.
Pour into 2 x 7in sandwich tins....line bottoms with baking parchment if tins are not non stick.
Cook for 40-45 mins. Turn onto wire rack to cool completely.
Sandwich together with butter icing, or cream and jam...... a pretend black forest gateau then :)
