Plastic sheeting or cylinder for bird feeders
« on: November 13, 2021, 11:46 »
Good morning everyone,  on the search for thin (0.3mm) plastic sheet to make bird feeders.  I'll even go for acrylic cilinders.  I've tried 'normal' sources but they seem to start at 3mm.  I will have to scour the poundshops etc in the hope that plastic packaging of this dimension may be available, (if the contents are useful, all the better).

Can anyone think of anywhere else to obtain thin flexible plastic sheet?

Cheers,  Tony.

Stage lighting shops? The 'gels' which are used to make lamp filters will be thin
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Good morning Yorkie, stage lighting shops in the middle of rural Wiltshire!  But we do have a good photography shop in the town, I may try there.  Thanks for the hint,  Cheers,  Tony.

Try craft shops for making templates I have something similar, I take it it needs to be rigid? Could you use empty slice tubes & paint them to cover the writing or something similar, or plastic pop / water bottles?

Hello snowdrops,  the problem is with shop bought bird feeders the plastic is very flexible and liable to crack under the dreaded UV rays.  I can use the existing fittings from feeders on the new tubes, problem with pop/water bottles is the curvature doesn't match.

Cheers,  Tony.

Can you cut down the length of the pop bottle to make it overlap to fit?

Good idea snowdrops but not my style,  looks a bit scruffy and places to harbour bugs and stuff.  Cheers,   Tony.

Good idea Yorkie, just my thought when I said I would go and see a photographer in town.  I have ordered a 1 meter/metre length of 60mm clear acrylic tube wall thickness 2mm (no seam)  as it was just as expensive as a 'standard' size bird feeder.

Cheers,  Tony.
