Wind Resistant Fruit
« on: March 16, 2013, 23:11 »
My site is exposed & we get a lot of high wind here in the extreme SW.  Trees are pretty sparse.
How do Plums, Gages, and pears stand up to windy conditions.
On the plus side frost is not frequent.
Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and be suspected of knowing nothing than opening it and proving it.

We have winds of up to 80mph at our site on a regular basis.

Cherries and plums on a tree 3.5m tall are fine

My apples and a pear tree are only up to 1.5 m tall and so benefit from the windbreak effect of our debris netting along the prevailing wind side of the plot and the shelter from next door's sheds.

However on next door's plot his pears and apples are unprotected and cope OK.

Couple of things to remember -- stake the trees very firmly indeed, and pear trees flower quite early, so if there are few insects in gale force winds it might well affect pollination.

Hope that helps a bit
