Pig Poo as fertiliser
« on: July 03, 2010, 18:23 »
i have a pig that lives in the house, but he does his poos outside in a fenced off area where my dogs do theirs,  my question is, is his poo any good for the allotment? if so how do i "use" it,  he is a big pig not one of those tiny miniature pigs so i have an abundance of poop, lol

Is it wise to have a pig living in your house?

In defence of pigs, they can be trained like dogs.  My grandfather kept pigs, therefore poo went on his garden after a 12 month on the heap.  He had a fantastic veg garden so go for it.

From my days working on a pig farm I understand that pig muck is very 'hot' and should not be added straight to the soil but left for 12 months to break down.

I am presuming that Eggan eats a predominantly veggie based diet and is wormed etc, if so add his 'offerings' to your compost heap, and once rotten down you have a good source of nutrients!

And tell him not to eat your veggies!- have heard of people using pigs to root out the last spuds after harvesting to prevent odd spuds popping up next year (apparently the pigs liked helping like this!)
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

yeah, he only eats veggies, lol he would be no help in the garden, he would never give up anything he has managed to root out for himself (greedy pig)!
thanks for all your advice, ill start putting his "offerings" on the heap.

The pigs used to get the last few spuds as their reward for finding them, and would often then leave manure behind- think I remember someone on the tv doing the same once to clear ground that needed a good roottling!
