Spring Onions
« on: July 05, 2014, 11:08 »
Hi there, this is my first year growing stuff and loving it! Would just like any thoughts on why my spring onions are quite short and stubby, the white bit that is.  They are White Lisbon variety?  Otherwise they have grown well and look healthy.  Suggestions welcome!

As they start growing build up the soil either side and you end up with a longer white end

I have the same issue,  I think I didn't water them enough, did you water them ?

I think I've watered them enough but maybe not as it's been very dry around here.  Will try that thanks Cadalot, have still got some young ones coming through.  Everything is a bit trial and error this year!  It's a bit of a learning curve.  New potatoes are brilliant though!

No problem,  I also give mine comfrey tea once a week, once in the ground and they are really growing well and I'm getting some smashing results. I start mine off in vending machine cups and sow in bunches see photos below. You can see I sow in circles with one in the middle and two rings like a target.

Do you just plant them out as they are, cadalot - without splitting them up after removing them from the cups?  Looking really good (envy)!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Here is a picture of the last lot to go in the ground behind the cucumber trellis.

I just dig a hole the cup size and empty them into it about 50 - 75mm apart. The rows are wide enough to get a hoe down and now I have built up the soil like potatoes so the rain / watering fills up the valleys between the rows
