Today's Lesson...
« on: September 30, 2011, 16:53 »
Do not harvest salad leaves, taking your time as you go to separate out any pest damaged leaves for the compost heap, standing out in the midday sun when its in the upper 20 degree heat outside, unless you have a cool bag.

Despite spending the afternoon in the fridge, my half carrier bag of lovely, fresh perfect looking mixed salad is now a bag of limp, unappetising, sad looking compost fodder :(

How do other people manage to harvest salad and keep it tip top when the weather is balmy outside?

Cheers,

Kosh

I find that much salad stuff is already a bit limp in hot weather even before it's picked.

I usually chuck everything in a colander and put that in a washing up bowl of cold water for half an hour - seems to revive most things!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I put mine in a salad spinner full of water for half an hour, spin and put into a plastic box in the fridge. Keeps a few days if necessary.

Like JayG says, put it in some water, the wonders of osmosis will soon revive your lettuce, as the water molecules will go from the areas of high concentration to the areas of low concentration to create a balance, clever aye :D
