Carrots from container to ground?
« on: July 04, 2010, 21:12 »
Hello,

I have a patch of soil that I will grow veg in but it's so stony that I need to sieve it out before I can plant anything. It's quite a large patch so it's going to be back-breaking and time-consuming to do this!

In the meantime, I thought I'd start growing carrot seedlings in a pot, later tranferring them when the ground soil is ready. When should I look to tranfer the seedlings / carrots into the ground, ie: is there a 'too early' or 'too late' time to do so?

Also I have covered the pot with cling film - is this necessary during such a warm July?

Any advice is massively appreciated.

Thanks

Carrots need very deep pots as they chuck out very long roots very quickly, and are not over keen normally on being moved!- so I have just been growing them in large deep pots of compost as soil not great in my garden.
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

Thanks for the quick response! I will scrap the seeds that I potted today and will re-plant in a larger pot tomorrow

Yea, suggest you just grow them in as big pots as you can find and not transplant.  Dont cover in any way at this time of year, its plenty warm enough.  Are you sure you need to sieve your soil?  How stony is it?

I've given up trying to grow carrots in our soil which is derived from boulder clay and is very stony. I get fantastic crops from flower buckets and other assorted deep containers and very few problems with carrot fly. If you go down that route I'd suggest you grow a stump rooted variety.

The soil is extremely stony. It would be impossible to pick even most of them out. When digging it up though, it looks like really good soil so hopefully should be great for growing veg.

Planted the carrots in a container so fingers crossed they turn out ok!
