Flowering rhubarb
« on: April 16, 2013, 19:21 »
I have just noticed a huge flower (looks like a head of brocolli)  in the centre of my one year old rhubarb.

The question is what shall I do leave it or remove it?.  If I have to remove it how should I tackle it?.

Keep removing flowers as they appear, just snap the heads off, you will not hurt the plant.  If you leave the flower it will be at the expense of new shoots.

And as they get bigger and older they keep producing more and more seed stalks. The seeds will grow but as lilacsandy says it's at the expense of the shoots. I twist them off at the base and keep an eye on them all summer, pulling as I find them.
