winter shelter for chickens
« on: September 17, 2010, 18:02 »
As this will be there winter will I need to build some extra shelter for the girls. they have a run under the coop but I feel this will not give shelter from the winter cold and wind.

You might want top consider some protection from the wind and rain and snow if it comes.
I have some clear corrugated plastic that I will use on top of the run and round some sides of the run as the wind can come from that direction. But it won;t all be enclosed, just the exposed areas.

The coop sits above the run. I have some perspex I could block off 3 side and leave the 4th open for ventilation? Making sure the wind is not blowing into the open side. What do you think ??

I have some clear corrugated perspex which I am going to get my oh to make a hen shelter with as the run is in a wind tunnel area.  I have one who is moulting at the moment and she won't sit down as she is cold so must get the shelter up asap.

Wishaw  Lanarkshire. Open fields behind us, where the snow that you had left over comes down from Inverness with a vengeance. Josh

You could also try some square bales to make a wind break  :)
