Garlic babies
« on: September 01, 2012, 15:16 »
One of the garlic varieties I grew this year, Thermidrome, has baby garlics halfway up the stem on some of the bulbs. If I plant those, will they grow into bulbs next year or do they need an extra year?

They are actually called bulbils, and yes, they do need at least two seasons, have a look at this antique thread for Trilluim's advice:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Shokky's may have done what a few of mine did, a new small bulb (with it's own cloves) had formed about 3 to 4 ins above the 'real' properly formed bulb at the bottom

This doesn't seem to be the same thing as bulbils forming in the flower scapes
I thought it was odd, and Googled it but couldn't find anything, so just blamed the weather

I know you're supposed to plant the bulbils as soon as you can but I'm afraid mine have all dried out.  :(  Do you think if I gave them a good soak it would still be worth potting them?

You can always try to rescue them but I'd advise planting them in something and keeping that well watered as the bulbs can rot quickly on you if soaked.

Not sure I'd call them a full bulb, but they're definitely not at the top where the scapes grew on my other varieties. They are just 3 or 4 ins above the proper bulbs. They are like a cluster of cloves but unlike cloves they're completely rounded, no flat side.

I've had that with a few of my garlics. Not sure why they do that but they can still be planted out as normal and will grow, and likely reproduce in the same way. Garlic is one plant that is very determined to reproduce in any manner possible.  :D

I didn't have this on my Music garlic, but did with the Early Purple Wight.
