The addition of wood-ash to manure in clay soil reduced plant height, dry matter yield, plant tissue protein and phosphorus of maize compared to the control. In both soils however, the addition of wood-ash improved responses where cattle and not chicken manure was applied

i'm not sure what the best advice is.  Should i put it in the compost bin or straight in the garden for my shrubs and flowers.

Bear in mind that ash can be used in place of lime. If you think it's appropriate to lime your soil, i'd say use it direct on your soil. Would you lime your compost heap?

Now I don't know my chemistry(please don't), WG, just as from experience, a bit of winter dusting with it does not hurt most soils, does it?

Do not put near any young plants.

within the heap?

interesting...

actually that makes sense - aiming for a neutral pH will make sure decomposition goes to completion. The reason peat bogs preserve stuff so well is that they become acidic, which halts decomposition.
