Can you use garlic cloves from supermarkets to plant out?

A lot of the supermarket bulbs come from Spain so may not be best equipped to grow in our climate.

I've not grown them before so can't comment, but the ones I got this year from the Really Garlicky Co, and also see WG's link!, are suitable for UK cultivation.

I found some elephant garlic yesterday could i plant these now?
or is it to late.?
see im a bit confused really as some people say just get the ones out of the supermarket brake into cloves plant .
but i read on a site that you can get the ones from supermarkets as these were grown in a hotter climate to ours and you need a different type.
i looked in the garden centers and couldnt find any or they didnt stock them.
one big garden center said yes they stock them but they have ran out and the next lot will be in in janurary. but they willl be a different type as the ones you were ment to put in in october/
.what type will they be in jan?
or can i do the elephant garlic

Elephant garlic is almost totally tasteless - search the forums for similar opinions.

We tend to talk about Spain as it was a town on the tropics. Most of continental Spain has got real cold winter, more so, than here.

And I think all garlic is tough for cold winter. If you want it cheap, supi ones should work. If you want to know, how it's been treated, what sort it is, etc., you buy some you fancy for sowing.

Yeah, most of the country is quite elevated. Iberian plateau, something like avg elevation 1000 ft, possibly more. That high up, get a clear night, there's frost.

Hush you two, for a while I sounded knowledgable and CeeJay fell for it.

That was the reason I thought anyhow and it sounded good to me.

Well in that case I'll find some of the bulbs lurking in the fridge bottom and plant em. If they grow good if not I'll have the answer.

My garlic comes from Tucker's Seeds. Great range, nice and cheap too  http://www.tuckers-seeds.co.uk/productlist.php?catid=1&subid=40

Be quick though, they're running out fast!
