Garlic bulbs
« on: August 14, 2020, 20:32 »
Hi

Any suggestions on good places to get bulbs from.

I am also thinking about planting outside vs in pots over the winter (keep in greenhouse). Any suggestions of growing methods would be super helpful.

Regarding suppliers I've used the following in the past. Happy with them all and you'll find a wide selection of varieties.

The garlic farm: https://www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk/buy/garlic-for-growing

Seeds of Italy: https://seedsofitaly.com/seed/garlic-onions-and-potatoes/

The really garlicky company: https://reallygarlicky.co.uk/shop/

Quickcrop: https://www.quickcrop.co.uk/category/onions-garlic2

From recollection they were all reasonable regarding P&P charges.

I would suggest growing a selection of varieties and seeing which suit your growing conditions.

I've always planted my garlic in the autumn except this year. Always had a good crop - except this year. Planted in 3" pots in the spring and then later planted them out in the garden. Not one developed into anything useful. Back to autumn planting in future.

What do "They" say about garlic.  Plant on the shortest day and harvest on the longest.

I tried growing Spring garlic in large pots this year. Result: small bulbs, disappointing. Fellow plot holders who planted in autumn into raised beds had the best results...

I had a few left over and no space in ground so shoved in a tub. As  wolveryeti says, grand in the ground and minute in tub. However, they do taste of garlic if minute.

I have been given an Elephant Garlic consisting of 5-6 Garlic Bulbs, (have I put it right), I asked the Old Boy (what do I do with it) he replied break a Bulb off bury it 10 inches in the ground at the end of September. Harvest around this time next year. Sounds far to easy, but would be nice as it is one hell of a Plant.

When we drove    past today we notice out in the field where the Garlic Farm is, it was full of workers so I would imagine they weren't on their knees  praying (I was on the Downs Road so raised above them) but     planting.

I get mine from Tesco who sell Spanish garlic which do OK and are certainly cost-effective compared with bulbs from the Garlic farm on the Isle of Wight and other "specialist" suppliers

Likewise, my garlic comes from the supermarket and this year I've grown some of the best ever from  Spanish bulbs. Apart from price, you can pick the best bulbs with the largest cloves for planting, and any smaller pieces can be used up in the kitchen.   :)
