[Gardener and Rabbit]

I know shallots are supposed to be planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest, but when I saw them being sold off very cheaply  in a garden centre I couldn't resist trying them the other way around.

So I chose Longor - which always seem to be a fast maturing variety - and planted them on 1st July.  So far, all is going well and they've grown away extremely fast, as expected, and the tops are fully grown. I'm going to let them grow on until the end of September, and will then take a look and see if they've managed to make any decent bulbs.

A lot of the shallot seeds I buy say sow in April to May. They'll push up out of the soil as they develop, so you'll see bulbs without needing to go furtling underground.

That's what I assumed Snoop. Except this year I had to dig them out but was pleasantly surprised at the size of them. Last year I also managed to miss a whole row so this year they grew again but as expected they produced large clumps of small bulbs.
