I wouldn't prune it to below first leaves right after flowering - I'd do it in stages, remove a couple of feet then, and then the rest once it has lost all its leaves in winter

I've had some success with kebab skewers from underneath.  Make sure the soil is moist, it helps unglue them

Sunny but not hot, so a very pleasant day for sitting out or just musing around the garden.

Cumberland pie with pots and creamed leeks with a side spoonful of Stokes red onion marmalade. That's me sorted.

MB, that's what I used to do but the module tray is so flimsy that if I get my hand underneath and squeeze the whole lot might fall out!

Sounds like a modern hybrid that can also be grown as a climber like my Gertrude Jeykll. You may lose some flowers but it shouldn't kill it.

I once grew them but they weren't that prolific. May I recommend Elegance as a big fruiter with a great taste. There's also Marie du Bois which is also a good one. I have both here.

Maybe eating it for the grit content, birds need grit to grind their food.

General Gardening / Hard pruning a rose in Summer

I have rose bush that really needs taming.  Normally I would just dead head after first flowering (flowering now) and get a second bloom  end of summer.  I'd really like to prune it back hard to about 3ft tall as it's currently got quite a few stems waving around about 9ft up!  Will I kill it if I cut back hard after flowering in summer.  I'd like to get it down to below first leaves.  Not sure what type it is, vigorous, a modern hybrid I think.

Thanks.
