Have I planted my maincrop peas out too early?
« on: April 28, 2012, 19:07 »
Today I planted out my maincrop pea seedlings.  They are a tall variety, Champion of England.  I am not growing too many due to space restrictions (see earlier posts re my seed purchase habit), so to avoid mice  I set them off in modules and have hardened them off nicely.

The ground is a little wet, but not overly so.  Anyway, I put them in this morning.
I was chatting to another allotment holder and we both agreed that someone else had put out his runner beans far too early and they are unlikely to survive.

However he surprised me by suggesting it was too early for my peas too and that they would be susceptible to further frost.  I always thought peas were quite hardy.  Should I protect them with fleece?

It is not too early for peas.

Not more to add!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine went in on Good Friday!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Peas will be fine now. If we were due a couple of nights of hard frost i may drape some fleece over them but i reckon they will be fine now. Runner beans on the other hand, having them outside already will not do them much good at all.

Thanks all.  I thought I was right, but good to have it confirmed so succinctly by all.

I'm fretting that mine are too late because I haven't sown them yet :) Actually, I have sown them twice, once without netting and once with, and both times the mice scoffed them. I'm now waiting for the ground to be a bit less soggy so I can have my third and final attempt. Oh well, I suppose an autumn pea crop will be a bit different.

mine aren't even sowed yet, I have run out of space for seedlings, 3 mini greenhouses almost fill the back garden.

I'm on my third attempt at peas this year.  Purple podded doing well having sprouted indoors, but outdoor Oasis terrible twice already... :(  Now got some chitting inside in the hope for better things....

Totally different from last year when I was early with everything and got away with it.  Ah, well, you live and learn!  8)
