The ladies have arrived!!!
« on: June 12, 2011, 14:41 »
Hello everyone!

Oh my gosh, I am so incredibly excited!! They have finally arrived!!!!

They are currently sitting nice and snug in their new little house with the door open so they can venture out into the run when ever they feel ready. I'm just wondering: Do we need to, at some point, lift them out to "show" them the out side bit? The food and water is out there for them, and I don't want them to go hungry! Especially after their long day of travelling!

There is a little "ladder" type thing for them to walk up and down also, so just a little worried that they might get a bit confused by it all. What did you guys do, and what would you advise?

Thanks so much in advance! I'll post pictures as soon as we've got them off the camera :-)

Hi Caramella,

We have had our girls for 2 weeks now and they were pretty good at finding their own way around,  we put them in the coop and left them too it for a while,  they were soon rearranging the nesting boxes and digging pits in the wood chippings.  im sure they will be just fine.

Hello Caramella
Welcome to the mad, mad world of chicken keeping. Gone are the days of watching the telly which you have now swapped for sitting outside watching live entertainment :D

They will sort themselves out in no time at all.

Advise: -
Worm them as soon as pos using Flubenvet.
Treat them for lice using Frontline (for kittens / cat).
Give them plenty of greens like cabbage, lettuce etc. which helps make yummy eggs.
Ensure they have a dust bath or they will dig a trench. Maybe make one for them.
Ensure your run / coop is fox proof.
Don't give them too many "none chicken" treats.

Say goodbye to your garden if you let them free range.

Enjoy your best investment for years ;)

Good Luck
