Onions......... Help please... What to do with them?
« on: January 19, 2011, 21:51 »
Hi All,

I have got myself some red onion sets, there are 250grams, 10/24mm. There were no instructions on the bag and as it's my first year of growing I am a little unsure of how to bring them on and eventually plant them. I am using grow bags and pots this year as I have no room to grow in the ground. I have the shed, spare room and windows sills available to use if any of these will help.  ;)

Thanks in advance
Paul

First things first!
what variety are they? I assume it is a spring planting one. they dont need to be indoors. they can go straight outdoors. As you are growing in pots they can go a wee bit earlier than the normal spring planting ones (say start of march.... if it is not a frozen britain again)

On growing onions in pots/growbags.
I think it would be difficult to get on top of watering as onions when they go dry they go bolting and they do sulk a lot because they are shallow rooted and for pots/growbags with just compost they might need some sort of support (I am not sure about support but am guessing). somebody should have tried growing them in pots in this forum so wait for more advice.  :)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

When you bung 'em in the ground, ensure they are covered with a bit of netting, birds are beggers for pulling up onions in their search for grubs etc.    Cheers,   Tony
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Thanks, I'll have a look again tonight and see what type they are. The packet doesn't really say much at all which isn't good for such a newbie as myself :(

I thought it would be easier to take a couple of pics.

Once I got the out of the net I could see that the skins are really dry and some have started to "shoot?" (is that the right word?) Is this normal??

The back of the label only says the size/price/weight etc.

Thanks in advance.

I rather think they may be winter or "Japanese" onions.

I did not get mine planted at due time with other happenings at home & then the winter weather. They look very much like that.

I doubt that ones that should be spring planted would look like that.

When & where did you buy them?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'd have thought Wilko's would only be selling spring planting ones at this time of year. They really shouldn't look like that. They may have been stored somewhere way too warm.

When I went to the nursery at Anstey last week, they hadn't even got their sets in as it was too early.

Should I scrap these then and buy some more?

Any tips on a good variety for pots/growbags?

Thanks

Sorry, never grown in pots/growbags, so you'll need advice from someone else on this.

It's too early & cold to plant outside, but now they've started they'll carry on trying to grow. You can try popping them in a tray of compost for a few weeks, ast least they'll get some moisture.

I know what I'd do, however!

Those are spring planting onions, they are just not a good quality. As you quite righty say they have been stored somewhere too warm.  I noticed our local Wilko's had them in to and they looked the same so i didn't bother. i'll grow from seed instead.

With limited space available I think I should just forget these and put it down to experience.
