what would you do with any boys that hatch? that is the first question you need to ask yourself. I have about five cockerels that I have got to dispatch when I can catch them (they aren't daft and all roost in trees about 20 feet up  ::)), would you be able to do this?
Ideally it isn't the best time to raise chicks as it would be around Christmas when they would hatch and then we would be getting snow shortly after that.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I have a Friend who has an allotment that takes the boys, when they get to about 16 weeks, as they start crowing too loudly then, I am waiting to hear about one also :) so then I would be able to keep the boys
I am keeping them in the summer house which they have full run of so don't need to go outside in the snow. I just feel sorry for her sitting on eggs that are never going to hatch  :(

can you raise them for meat?

How much meat is on a boy? Probably not much, but if there were enough, then it would solve the ethical problem of just despatching them.

you won't get much meat off a cockerel unless it is from a dual purpose breed or a table breed, however for just a couple of people one bird will be fine. If they are silkies then you could do what Spana does and spatchcock them - one per person. When we visit Malta there is a lovely restaurant near Mdina that does a spatchcock with lime - yummy.
