cheap jars
« on: September 04, 2010, 11:43 »
I've put this here rather than in frugal living, because jars at this time in the year are used by us on 'ere

In asda, they have jars of picked red cabbage for 20p. Cabbage looks strange, but empty the jar and you can reuse it -- very cheap.

Jars are slightly larger than the 'pound of jam' size, with white screw lids

or 13p for a jar of 'value' curry sauce in Morrisons.

(The sauce is not for using, just to keep the jar steady in transit.  Probably).

I'm having a jar clear out, saved a dozen for Joy, then a lady was coming for half of the remainder and a man for the other half.  After a week they are still still sitting there!  The lady says she had to go up north on a family matter, but will pop round soon, that was a week ago.

The man sent me an email on Monday at 11.30pm after I'd logged off saying he was coming the next morning, but I didn't read the email until lunchtime.  Then he said he was coming Thursday after 1.30pm, but still not seen him!  And they haven't been as the jars are still sitting by the front gate!

Strange people!

9p for a glass jar of sainsurys basics curry sauce, its not that strong cury flavor so the lids may not be tainted with the curry.

Makes you wonder why new unused jars cost so much, doesn't it?

If you chuck it through the dishwasher, that eliminates any taste or smell from the original contents.

Does anyone know of a source of cheap jars in smaller size? I'm after jars for stuff like lazy garlic and easy chilli, which when you buy them are marked as 90g sort of size, though I'm not sure how that translates into pounds and ounces or litres (so confusing the way they're marked). It needs to be fairly small but with a wide enough mouth to get a teaspoon into easily.

I'm grateful to you guys for drawing attention to these cheap jars.  Surprisingly, the Sainsbury's curry sauce has an acceptable taste - if you lace it with tamarind.  Quite a bargain  :) .

I bought up all the tesco basics mint sauce in two local towns for 15p a jar, I had 40 jars altogether, they are now 25p a jar but this is the size I really like and at 25p a jar they are still cheap :)  And tesco sweet pickle jars at 25p each are also a good size.
