Pygmy Goat advice wanted
« on: July 14, 2010, 19:54 »
We are thinking of buying a pair of pygmy goats and have no idea where to begin, can anyone suggest a useful book or site to get some really basic information (where to buy, how to house/ feed, breed types, )
many thanks Daisy
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

Hi Daisy, try the Pygmy Goat Club

http://www.pygmygoatclub.org/

They can put you in touch with breeders nearest to you!

We used to have a lovely chocolate brown pymgy called Winkie, I can't remember what his 'proper' name was, but it was a bit long winded!

I used to have two Pegasus and Mercury.  Watch out as they tend to be little horrors!  The idea was they would eat all the scrub round the fields and the stuff my horses wouldn't touch.  The little blighters would head butt you given any chance and at their height usually meant in the back of your knees which would then send you sprawling (usually into  some kind of muck!) Loved them to bits mind you!

We got Winkie to keep William company.  At the time of rescuing William, we were told he was a pygmy goat, but he grew a bit too tall, then we discovered that he was in fact a Bagot goat and the lady at the Bagot goat society said all Bagots are semi-feral.

The first couple of years with Winkie, he was wonderful.  Very gentle, would never butt, but then he started copying William, who was a brute!!!  :( :(

I had a horrible experience with Bagot goats when I worked at a Zoo in the 70s. Keepers thought it would be funny to let rookie keeper clean the enclosure, and locked me in. (((shudder))) Thet weren't friendly!

Pygmy goats are rather like shetland ponies....cute but little b*******s, bless their little hairy legs!

I personally would start with a 25ft electrified and barbed wire fence with watch towers on all corners, they are notorious for finding their way out of places. Wouldn't give 'em house room myself, but each to their own.

Actually Winkie never tried to escape, but where we got him from in Derbyshire, their main goat was a terror!  He used to jump from shed roof to shed roof until he was high enough to go over the fence!
