Roses for Norway
« on: March 25, 2010, 17:15 »
Hi All

Can you help.

I have a friend who lives in Norway, up near the Arctic Circle, she would love to grow Roses but doesn't know which type.

Can anyone suggest something she could try.

Many thanks

Are there any native roses she can get? Those would be the best adapted to her severe winters. I would say an absolute no to any hybrids, teas, miniatures and other fancy ones as most are hardy to only -20C max and they'd suffer bad winterkill even if they pulled through. The native types are shrubby ones with lots of prickles, and not tall.

Just remembered that there's a gardening tv gal from Iceland, I believe. Does your Norwegian friend get this telly show? There would be great recommendations for sub-arctic plants.
