'First Aid/Medical' essentials
« on: September 15, 2009, 12:18 »
Hi again!

So many questions keep popping into my mind!

What does everyone keep 'instock' when owning chickens?

I have read through a few post about poorly hens :( and it sounds as if you have stuff at home ready to treat what may occur (or the most common things maybe?).  So what would you suggest i had ready for if needed.

I'd be grateful if you could give me the name (ie coxoid) and what its for.

Thanks

(ps - am i starting to sound knowledgeable including coxoid?  just noticed that was one of the things mentioned on another thread and sounds as if that should be on my list?)

I keep the following,
petroleum jelly (eg vasolene) for things like scaley leg mite and for their combs in winter (although never had to use it on their combs).
diatom - powder for their bedding and coups as a mite preventative.
poultry shield - I sparay their coups twice a year but would do more should I find mites.
coxoid - in case my hens get coccidiosis.
poultry spice - sprinkle on their feed as a booster.
garlic - crush a couple of cloves and put in their water.
purple spray - from horsey places to help if they have been bullied and had blood drawn (hens go mad for the sight of red).
louse powder and mite powder to give my girls and boys a dusting.
Flubenvet for worming twice a year (get from vets).
Frontline for twice yearly mite/lice protection again from vets.
Think thats it - plus I also have antibiotic powder (aureomycin) but you need to see a vet with a poorly hen before they should prescribe this.

I've never stocked coxoid, but think I will since reading so much in the past few days on the forum....  Not worth not having!

Unfortunatly hens can go downhill so quickly and aren't able to tell us exactly what the problem is so best to be prepared.
Now the humans in our family get no sympathy at all as most of the time it's self inflicted (including the fractured skull my o/h got 18 months ago and myself when I broke my leg the month before him)

Yep forgot the ACV, give mine cooked shells and oyster shell so don't use limestone flour, mine also free range (1/2 acre plus) so again don't use stalosan, but as a disinfectant I do use Vanodine  :D

A bottle of Savlon is useful for cleaning wounds or adding to water when washing their rear ends (after diarrhoea or to cool them down if broody).
Disposable gloves for yourself (!) can be very useful.

I came across this a while ago.
First Aid Box for Hens.
-triple antibiotic with pain killer
-bandages
-bandaids
-vet tape (the stuff without glue but sticks to itself)
-iodine
-syptic powder (can use flour or sugar in an emergency)
-I use DE but if you don't you should have wormer (fenazole (sp?) is one of the better ones.
-electrolytes for birds (as opposed to gatorade and others that have too much sugar)
-fingernail clippers
-sharp small scissors
-large scissors
-tweezers
-locking tweezers (like a cross between plyers and scissors that lock shut)
-aspirin
-alcohol
-tea tree oil
-peroxide
-cotton balls, and the flat round ones
-q-tips
-vasoline
-terramycin oitment (antibiotic cream for the eyes)
-apple cider vinegar
-vicks vaporub (or generic version)
-bottled water (in case I need to grab the kit and go out in the yard)
-Phone numbers to all the "good" vets along with the names of ones with a bad rep (no matter the emergency I have one vet I won't let touch ANY of my animals!)
-I should add phone numbers of other chicken keepers to help me if in need

-Other thinks I SHOULD have-- antibiotics, penG, and other harder to find items that I can only get online.  This also reminds me I need to go check expiration dates and replace what needs replacing!

It's all in a rubbermaid type clear box with lid and clearly marked----ready to grab and go if need be.
