Chilli Question
« on: August 06, 2009, 23:00 »
I have found a recipe for runner bean chutney(got to do something with them!) but it needs chilli flakes.
I have been round tesco and sainsburys but they do not have them.
Can I use chilli powder instead, and if so how much - I have read that flakes are milder than powder,
Or if not, does anyone know where I can get flakes from please?

Thanks

Elaine

Power is just flakes that have been crushed more.  :D

I guess you'd need less powder, why not flake some peppers yourself. Buy fresh peppers dry them on a low heat (50ish) for an hour or so then crush them up to the required "flakiness".

As Lardman saiy,s you can crush dried chillis yourself, but if you have an asian grocer near you they will have some for sure  :D

Podwer is OK but it might make the end result a bit murky

I spotted jars of dried chilli flakes in Aldi on wednesday, can't remember exactly how much they were but they were cheap (OH thinks they were 59p)
What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

Thats almost worth a trip in - I go do with something like that. most of the time I end up using those zip lock plastic bags which is less than ideal.

.... Not  that I've got any peppers yet to put in it !  >:(

Thanks for all your replies.
Our Tesco has no chilli flakes this week.
Went off in search of new Aldi store this evening but failed to find it :tongue2:
Hope to look in Asian grocers tomorrow.

Cheers

Elaine
