I'm a rhubarb virgin, never grown the stuff yet although we love it. I've just cleared some space, about 2yd x 1 yd, and intend to prep the soil but would like advice on what people find works best.

A friend has promised me some of his rhubarb in Aug so it looks like I have the time to do it.

Clear the weeds, add loads of manure, compost, coir, whatever humus items you have and work in well. Rhubarb are hungry feeders if you expect good crops. Once you put the roots in, water often so they can settle in and start expanding. By next spring you should be able to take off just a few stalks. The year after you should be able to take off more. Most of us give the plant a late fall mulch feed of more old manure, then stand back in spring

Thanks. That sounds like wat I was thinking of so will go for it. Lots of well composted cow manure and our own compost. I take it Aug will be OK to put the stuff into prepped bed?

Planting is generally late autumn to late winter (Oct-Feb).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Or spring as long as the ground is wet and it's reasonably cold, so probably not August.
