Woud a mango grow?
« on: April 09, 2008, 17:06 »
My daughter has just had a mango and wants to plant the seed (or is it a stone or pip :? ).
I'm guessing I would never get mangos but would I get a little mango tree?

Suggest you put it in compost in a sealable polythene bag and put in the airing cupboard. Then check every week and put in a pot as soon as it germinates. Further down the line you'll need to pinch it out to get a good shaped plant. They make quite impressive specimens.

I germinated mine leaving the stone in the sink (it's kept moist nicely there) until cracked it takes a couple weeks or so, if I remember well.

Beautiful but very fast growth, put it in a large pot straightaway as very fussy about transplanting.

Some mango trees can grow quite big.

It reminds me - a couple of weeks ago I was asking my mother (in Australia)  if she had any tips for growing sweet potato.

She says: "You don't have to try - just put em in the ground and they'll take over".

What a difference an average year-round temp of 25C+ makes :)

cheers,

Derek
