Late potato varieties
« on: July 30, 2016, 11:38 »
Someone recently mentioned some varieties of potatoes suitable for planting after some other crops were finished, but I cannot find the thread. The aim is to have some new potatoes for over the festive period. I have a bed free which I would like to utilise for this and wondered if anyone could kindly point me towards some suitable varieties, or even a supplier of such.

Thanks
Jon

Thank you for the prompt reply. That article has some very useful information and I will certainly be planting a couple of rows in the empty bed.

Thanks again
Jon

The most popular varieties are Nicola, Charlotte, Duke of York, Maris Peer and Pentland Javelin.

Most garden centres will have the Taylors brand, they are a 9 tuber pack for £2.99
I have seen both Taylors Charlotte and Duke of York at my local garden centres recently.
Also check out your local waitrose, noticed they had 5 each of Duke of York, Charlotte and Pentland Javelin in a pack for £7.99

The RGS has some good growing info too;

Best bet would be to grow them in potato bags or containers on top of your soil, as they provide good frost protection if that is a concern in your area and you can always move into a greenhouse if need be.
