Norlett Rotavator Servicing
« on: May 18, 2014, 11:35 »
Hello everyone just joined the site having discovered it on Google.
I acquired a rotavator on ebay last winter, which works great.  Looking at the forums it looks as if it is a Norlett Versatiller.
I have managed to give the engine a service but wanted to check the oil in the blade drive.
It looks like the picture.
Anyone know which bolt is the drain plug and how full it should be.

they are excellent when the engines run. most of the bolts on the head go through to the inside, you want a high temperature grease to go in there. failing that take the far end cap off, and inject grease through there.
just looked at my dissasembly pics and the top bolt holding the side cover on if removed will allow you to pump in grease.
If you need any more help I have two of these with dead engines (mine  have the aspera engines)
that big gear is phosphor bronze, and if you get a head jam with a rock or something can be damaged if its bad enough to stall the engine.
my first one came after such a jam and I had to replace the camshaft that had sheared in the engine as well as free the gear head that was jammed with swarf from the bronze gear (it still worked afterwards)

Thanks for the information.
Mine also has the Aspera engine.
Interesting what you say about the engine.  Mine starts really well and has been no trouble at all.
There said it now, so will probably never run again!

the engines run well, I have been through 3 carburettors without getting a reliable one, the last one sucked the air filter sponge into the engine - that didnt help much at all.
admittedly in the 4 years I had mine it lived outside under a tarp, remember to turn off the fuel and run it until it shuts down as you dont need any fuel in the carb while its sitting, the fuel dries out and leaves a powder that can clog up the carburettor.
