Hi

I've got a very long staging setup in our new 54 foot PT.  I'm thinking of trying to recover some of the money spent on the PT by using some of my staging to grow a few extra plants to sell to local allotmenters/greenhouse owners. 

I've found this supplier on Ebay.

Any recommendations as to selecting the right trays or pots would be welcome.  What's the normal size of pot you get when you buy say tomato plants at a garden centre?

id check your T+Cs as most allotment sites don't allow you to sell stuff from of your plot

Allotment-wise, you can sell genuine surplus, but not produce/plants specifically grown for sale.

It's in Mum's (not Stig's Mum) garden so I'm sure she'd have no objections.

They are 7cmx7cm by 7cm deep.  Work out at 6p each.  Would they be big enough to grow toms in until they could be sold?  I wouldn't want to sell root balls!!!

I used to sell a few of my plants in 3" pots.  then if you haven't sold them by the time they need re-potting, you could re-pot and charge more for them!

Just a little thought, at our school we get the children to make newspaper pots which are then planted up and sold several weeks later.  Usually use a large sheet per pot, then it is sturdy, and for replanting you can just peel off a couple of layers without disturbing the roots, and of course, cost nothing other than a little masking tape!  If you keep an eye out for some smallish boxes people could fill a box for an amount!!

Exactly what I do at the local Country market. 50p a shot for 3" tomatoes.
I did pick up about 3000 3" pots for free from a nursery throwing them out mind you  .
I find peppers, chillis and aubergines sell better as bigger plants.

Maybe 8 years ago I had a try at that. I found that geraniums and fuchsias, both easy to grow with a bit of warmth, gave higher sales numbers and profit by plant. I generally sold them in 4inch pots but as said above they can be repotted if needs be and sold at a higher price.

Car boot sales were a superb market, I used to sell 50 or so per day. Produce a laminated sheet for each variety with a picture and lots of description, people loved them.

I then moved and lost my garage so gave up but the profit is still there.
