Title: They've arrived!!
Post by: sorrel on January 30, 2007, 11:21
:tongue2:  :tongue2:  :D   All eight chicks have now hatched.   I have to confess we helped one ( a marans who was having great difficulty breaking out)!  I know that your not supposed to help out and let nature take its course - but we did and this moring although smaller and weaker than the others - it appear to be getting much stronger.

Got 2 marans (black fluffy with white head spot)
1 RIR - yellow (huge and fluffy)
2 Welsummers (bolshy and cute)
1 Barnevelder (sleepy)
2 Leghorns (one handsome and one a scrag)

Scrag's my official favourite (always love the scruffy underdog)

Will get hubby to take pics tonight and will post them asap.

PS Also had our first Araucana egg (beautiful bluey green and perfect shape)

 :D  :D

There were some very good articles in last years Practical Poultry on "Assisted Hatching" they were in volumes 30 and 31.  I can send anyone a photocopy if they want one  ( if I can dig the mags. out    )

Don't worry.  Out of my current 5 I helped 2 out - moistened edges of shell with sterile water and pulled some off gently.  One bit did start to bleed a bit, but ok once left for a while to dry some more.  All got out ok.

I remember reading the thread about dead chick in shell, Karl.  You're right, do what you need to.

The camera used was an olympus c4040, its a few years old now but takes good pics.  Cant take the credit though, my husband took all the pictures!
