Title: What does "Open Habit" mean?
Post by: DHM on September 28, 2018, 05:25
Looking for a vining courgette to train up a trellis but seem to only be able to find bush types, though I've found one that says its 'open habit'. Is this likely to be a climber?

I suspect that just means it grows more into a bowl shape than a dense bush.

There are a few climbing courgette varieties if you gurgle it, although I've not tried them (had enough trouble with winter squashes trying to take over my runner bean frame this year!)

I'd go for Tromba d'Albenga it is definitely a climbing courgette/squash plant. Huge flowers and sometimes the fruit are a funny shape  :D Seeds available quite widely, here's just one supplier..

Open habit translates as it will try and cover all the ground you have plus next door ! :)

"Normal" fruiting style courgettes described as climbing tend to be straggly growers and need tying onto a support, but ones like MoS mentioned, Tromboncino types have tendrils and do they job themselves. The other good thing about them is that any you miss ripen rather nicely into fruits you can store

Plus of course they look really good!!
