Title: New Shoot - Potato Onions?
Post by: mumofstig on November 10, 2017, 09:37
I've been wondering about these for a while, and have found seed bulbs of white, yellow and red ones.
Which have you grown, how big were the bulbs and how strong are they?  (I really don't like very strong onions at all)

Gurgling seems to offer a wide range of opinions, as you'd expect, depending on whether they're selling them or growing them  ::)  :D

Mine grew like shallots, with a similar size to the resulting bulbs but I would say a slightly milder flavour to true shallots.

They are widely grown in the US, where they are also known as multiplier onions.  As they have been passed from hand to hand over the years, there must be countless versions in circulation, which may account for the varying reviews

Mine all bolted in store one mild winter, so I lost the lot including my seed crop.  Generally they store year to year with no trouble.

My mum always said 'how do you know you don't like it, if you've never tried it so...

it looks like I'll just have to try them, thank you

Interesting -  does anyone know whether they are attacked by the same pests as the better known alliums?

We didn't have leaf miners in site when I was growing them (we do now ::)), so maybe.  Some of my leeks had signs of miners this year, but the onions I harvested this summer were fine.

They are pretty small when growing, so would be way easier than leeks to cover up  :)
